The postgraduate clinical residency course leading to the degree of MD / MS /MDS is of duration of 3 years in all Russian medical universities and is available in Russian medium in all medical universities and in English medium in select Russian medical universities.
All universities in Russia offer the postgraduate course in Russian medium; for students who opt for the Russian medium, the main course of 3 years, and would be preceded by one year of the Russian language preparatory faculty.
Students opting for the post graduate course in the English medium have to undergo a 3 month conversational course in the Russian language along with the main course in the first year. This is to help them interact with the local Russian patients during the clinical visits and also for the local interaction in daily life. There is no additional payment to be made for this 3 month course.
For all postgraduate medical courses in Russia, including Masters Degree and Doctoral programs, foreign citizens are accepted who have documents which have been accepted by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation as being equivalent to the graduate medical and dental programs conducted in Russia. To attain this equivalency, all original documents have to be “Apostiled” in India by the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi. All guidance in this regard is extended by the IFSC to ensure a smooth completion of this process. Since the Indian medical and dental graduate degrees are not equivalent, the student may need to undergo a bridging program along with his postgraduate education to make his Indian degree equivalent to the Russian graduate degree. This bridging program runs simultaneously with the postgraduate study and no extra cost is incurred. The total duration for the post graduate program including the 3-month Russian language and the bridging program would remain 3 years depending on the specialization.
As far as recognition of the post graduate Degree awarded by the medical universities of Russia, the same is recognized and accepted as equivalent in most countries of Europe by virtue of Russia being a signatory to the Bologna convention. The degrees are also valued in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, Mauritius and Seychelles where our students are employed.
In the context of India, the Medical Council of India at the present time does not recognize or register the postgraduate degrees after the graduate MBBS degree from India, from anywhere in the world except USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand. This means that the doctors with postgraduate degrees from any other country would be unable to work as a specialist in Indian government hospitals nor teach the specialization learnt. However, such doctors can have their own private practice or work in private hospitals in India.
However, as per the new notification of the Dental Council of India dated 13th, August 2009, in the Indian Gazette post graduation from abroad including Russia is now recognized and registered in India by the Dental Council of India after the clearing of a screening exam. The 3 year MDS course from Nizhny Novogorod State Medical Academy a premium Russian goverment Universities is equivalent to the MDS course in India.
